Getting Started with Nordic Skiing as a Family
When the snow starts falling and the days get crisp and bright, there's nothing quite like stepping onto a pair of Nordic skis and gliding into the quiet beauty of winter. For families looking to spend quality time outside, Nordic skiing is one of the most rewarding, accessible, and downright magical ways to embrace the season together.
We discovered Nordic skiing a few winters ago when our daughter Anna was just old enough to start shuffling along on skis. Since then, it's become a cornerstone of our family's winter rhythm—something we all look forward to, not just for the activity, but for the memories it creates.
We discovered we can cross-country ski here in the U.S. a few winters ago and were so thrilled to be able to be back on skinny skis. In those early years, both of our daughters spent countless hours peacefully napping in the ski chariot as we glided through snowy forests and open meadows—warm, cozy, and lulled by the rhythm of our skis. These days, they ski right alongside us, their laughter echoing through the trees. Since then, it’s become a cornerstone of our family’s winter rhythm—something we all look forward to, not just for the activity, but for the memories it creates.
Why Choose Nordic Skiing as a Family?
There are plenty of winter sports to try, but Nordic skiing (also known as cross-country skiing) checks so many boxes for families:
Low Cost: Compared to downhill skiing or snowboarding, Nordic skiing is more affordable. Trail passes are inexpensive (or sometimes free), and gear is cheaper to rent or buy.
Easy to Learn: Classic skiing, in particular, is intuitive for kids. It’s more like walking or hiking than mastering a complex skill set.
No Crowds, No Lifts: You don’t have to wait in long lines or fight for space. You just clip in and go.
Year-Round Benefits: Nordic skiing builds strength, endurance, coordination, and a love for the outdoors—skills and habits that stick long after the snow melts.
How to Get Started (Without the Stress)
If you're brand new to the sport, here's how to make that first outing a smooth one:
1. Find a Family-Friendly Nordic Center: Look for a local trail system or ski center that offers beginner trails and rentals. Seek the ones having kid-specific gear and ideally short loop trails that are perfect for trying things out without committing to a full day.
2. Choose the Right Ski Style: Start with classic skiing, which involves a forward-and-back glide within set tracks. It's much easier for kids (and adults!) to pick up than skate skiing, which requires more balance and technique.
3. Rent Before You Buy: Especially for fast-growing kids, renting is a smart way to test the waters. Most ski centers rent boots, skis, and poles for a half or full day. Once your family is hooked, you can start looking at used gear or seasonal rentals.
4. Dress in Layers: This is huge. Nordic skiing is aerobic—you’ll warm up fast! Make sure everyone is dressed in moisture-wicking base layers, a warm mid-layer, and a breathable outer layer. And don’t forget gloves, hats, and sunglasses.
5. Bring Snacks (And Bribes!): We always pack a thermos of hot tea, trail mix, and a few secret treats to keep spirits high. Little rewards go a long way.
Keep It Simple and Fun
One of our early outings with Anna ended after just 30 minutes and one epic face-plant. But we celebrated with cocoa, built a snowman on the meadow, and called it a win. That’s the beauty of Nordic skiing—every trail, every day is a new chance to laugh, explore, and connect.
Whether you’re gliding around gentle loops with little ones or exploring tree-lined trails side by side, Nordic skiing offers families a wonderful way to embrace winter together. All it takes is some snow, a few warm layers, and a spirit of adventure.
